Với 76 VĐV tham dự trong đó có 30 Đại kiện tướng cùng tranh nhau 10 suất vào vòng chung kết thế giới vào cuối năm tại Moscow. Giải thưởng cho giải này là 64000USD. VĐV từ các nước Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyistan, Lebanon, Pakistan, The Philippines, Qatar, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen.Việt Nam có 3 thành viên là Hoàng Thanh Trang, Nguyễn Anh Dũng và Đào Thiên Hải, qua 11 vòng đấu chỉ có Anh Dũng đạt được hạng 13 để cùng chia giải thưởng với người cùng hạng 7~15. The 3rd Asian Individual Championships took place 9th-18th August, 2001 in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India. 30 GMs and equal number of IMs and title holders participated in the strongest event yet was held in India. The top 10 players are qualify for the World Chess Championships to be held later this year in Russia. The big prize money tournament has opened greater avenues for Indians and said the USD 64000 event is fully sponsored by FIDE. Players are from Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Pakistan, The Philippines, Qatar, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen. Chinese GM Xu Jun won the event on 8.5/11. Uzbekistan GM Saidali Iuldachev finished in 2nd place on 8 and Indian Surya Shekhar Ganguly took third on tie-break from Zhang Pengxiang (China), Alexei Barsov (Uzbekistan) and Ehsan Ghaem Maghami Iran) all of whom finished on 7.5.
